THEATRELAND

New Victoria Theatre, Woking

From 14 to 26 October the unforgettable Chicago comes to Woking. 'Murder, greed, violence, corruption, adultery... All those things we hold near and dear to our hearts.' So begins this kiss-and-tell tale of Roxie Hart, a nightclub dancer who kills her lover. Sharp lawyer Billy Flynn turns Roxie into a celebrity....

Chicago is a loving look back at vaudeville, a timeless satire on the justice system and, above all, a reminder of what great theatre can be. And the dancing is just sensational!

From 19 to 23 November one of the world's finest opera companies, Glyndebourne, returns to the New Vic. with three productions. On Tuesday 19th and Saturday 22nd is Bizet's Carmen; on Wednesday 20th and Saturday 23rd, Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin; and on Thursday 21st Britten's Albert Herring. The acclaimed director David McVicar gives his masterly touch to what will be an outstanding visit.

That old favourite, Richard O'Brien's Rocky Horror Show rampages into Woking to delight us from 2 - 7 December. There can be few who do not know this biggest, baddest and most orgasmic rock'n'roll musical, now celebrating its 30th electrifying year. Frank n Furter, Brad, Janet and all the crew dare you to join them for an evening filled with delicious, but dangerous, delights. Sweet Transvestite, Damn It, Janet and, of course, Time Warp... Just enjoy the songs - and the spectacle.

Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, Guildford, 01483 440077

From 30 September until 5 October Graham Greene's Travels With My Aunt comes to Guildford. Starring Gary Wilmot, Jeffrey Holland, Clive Francis and Andrew Greenough this is the entertaining stage version of Greene's very witty novel.

Henry, whose aunt it is, is rather dull, living on his adequate bank manager's pension and indulging his passion for dahlias. Life takes an unexpected turn when, at his mother's funeral, he meets the redoubtable Aunt Augusta - and is propelled into a madcap dash around the world. Paris, Istanbul, even Paraguay - it's all a long way from Southwood!

The four stars between them play over 24 different characters, changing identities, ages, sexes, nationalities, even species, along the way.

Travels will be a thoroughly eccentric and bizarrely entertaining evening.

From 7 until 12 October that masterly performer Edward Woodward is at the Yvonne Arnaud appearing in Goodbye Gilbert Harding.

Gilbert Harding, for those not old enough to remember, was a TV personality: an outspoken panellist known as 'the rudest man in Britain'. From 1951, having been a schoolmaster, he became part of the post-war way of life with his appearances in the long-running game show What's My Line? But behind the public image was a very private man. Leonard Preston's new play delves beneath the surface.

Based on the original memoirs of Harding's private secretary, this is at once a moving comment on the perils of fame, and a celebration of a true free spirit.

Riverside Barn Snares TV Talent

Elmbridge-based theatre company Complicated Productions has attracted the talents of a TV professional for its latest production.

Gary Wicks whose TV credits include Spooks, Casualty and Peak Practice, will be directing Love at First at the Riverhouse Barn in Walton-on-Thames at the end of September. The play is written by Walton-based playwright Peter Shaw.
"I loved the script from the moment I read it," explains Gary, who has previously directed such diverse plays as Faustus with the Royal Shakespeare Company at the Swan Theatre in Stratford, and Godspell on a national tour. "Love at First is a great piece of work, and I leapt at the chance to take it on."

"I'm delighted that Gary has agreed to direct the play," explains producer Chris Dicken. "Gary's experience, together with a talented young cast, will make each performance a really great night out."

Chris continues: "Complicated Productions is committed to bringing professional theatre and new writing to the area. Walton's Riverhouse Barn is an ideal venue."
Love at First is an intimate two-hander, a comedy that explores the complexity of modern relationships and the search for an ideal partner. It takes the audience on a journey where fantasy and reality mix. Nothing, and no one, is quite what it seems.
Love at First is at the Riverhouse Barn, Walton-on-Thames on 27th, 28th and 29th September. Tickets are available from the Riverhouse Barn on 01932 253354.
