The Legal Side of Marriage

Tradition has it that a wedding takes place in the bride's parish church.

The minister will 'publish the banns' on three Sundays before the ceremony. This is designed to give those who know the prospective bride and groom the opportunity of coming forward if they 'know of any just cause or impediment' why the couple should not be lawfully wed.

Most brides are 'given away', usually by their father, but there is nothing to say that another, such as her mother, should not undertake this duty.

The usual sequence of events at a wedding is:
  • The minister's introduction
  • The first hymn
  • The minister's address
  • The ceremony, including vows and rings
  • The declaration of 'husband and wife'
  • The signing of the Register

While there may be slight alterations to this sequence, this is the accepted style.

The choice of music is a very personal thing and you would be well advised to seek expert assistance before making your final decision.
Whatever music you choose do not forget to keep the minister informed.

Always seek the advice of the minister on such matters as floral decorations within the church and, particularly, the throwing of confetti. It is also advisable to check where the bridal car(s) and others may park during the ceremony. And don't forget to check if there are restrictions on photography during the service.
