The Plough

The Plough was one of the Cobham Brewery pubs along with the Little White Lion, The Running Mare, the Bear and the Antelope. The Brewery closed down in 1922 and the premises were taken over by Watney's.

This Plough pub is sometimes confused with another nearby in Stoke D'Abernon. That plough has a significnt place in English literature as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle based his Adventure of the Speckled Band using the Plough as the model for the inn where Holmes and Watson stayed. And this is not Cobham's only literary connection. Coming out of the Plough with a little too much ale and looking across the landscape is chilling to recall that HG Wells featured Martian Machines approaching Cobham in his War of the Worlds
