Korea Cottages and the Cobham Workhouse

Numbers 1-8 and 11-12 Korea Cottages were built as part of Cobham Park Estate about 100 years ago replacing a mixture of older properties. The buildings are excellent examples of estate cottage architecture and as a result of single ownership throughout their life have retained their architectural uniformity.

Cobham Workhouse

Numbers 9 and 10 Korea Cottages are a perfectly symmetrical pair of cottages dating from the second half of the 18th century and are very sirnilar to estate properties built by Lord Dorchester at Milton Abbas. They are considered to be very interesting within the context of Surrey domestic building architecture and are deceptive in that the central front door suggests originally a single, imposing building, perhaps a farmhouse. It was almost certainly, however, the entry to a sheltered passage from which the main entrances to the cottages ran off at right angles. The cottages are thought to be the last of the local workhouse and parish cottages which were bought by Henry Worsfold in 1837, the incumbents being transferred to a new work house in Epsom.
